An oil coat had spread over a seven km area near the nesting site off the Rushikulya beach after around eight tons of furnace oil leaked from an Essarowned vessel near Gopalpur port, 20 km from here, on April 12. Being pushed by high tide, the spilled oil spread to the coast. Villagers claimed that they had seen carcasses of adult turtles along the coast after the sea water had been contaminated. Around 155, 000 of the rare Olive Ridleys had nested along the coastline in March while the mass hatching of eggs, which continued for a week, ended last week. “The authorities cleaned only 2 km—3 km stretch of the beach. Many eggs were damaged due to the effect of oil deposits. Moreover, many baby turtles failed to move out of the nest as the soil also got harder,” Sahu, who along with villagers of Purunabandha has been working in the turtle conservation programme in the last 16 years, said. Turtle expert Kartik Shanker also raised similar concerns. “The oil spill will have an effect on the mortality rate of the hatchings. But scientifically, it is not possible to arrive at a mortality figure for it,” Shanker, a professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, said. Marine scientist Bijay Kumar Sahu said there was an immediate need for a detailed multidiscipline faculty study on the longterm impact of the oil spill on the marine environment. State forest and wildlife officials, however, refuted (反駁) the claims. “The oil spill has had no effect on the hatching process. Oil was cleaned from the beach a long time ago and the issue is now a closed chapter,” the states Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Srivastava said. The mortality rate of the hatchings is usually high with only one out of every thousand surviving to bee an adult turtle. “Out of around 100120 eggs laid by a single female turtle, only about 80 of them hatch. The newborns then face threats from predators like crows, jackals, etc. They also get eaten up by sea predators,” wildlife activist Biswajit Mohanty said. 1.Many baby turtles couldnt get out of their nests after they were hatched because ________. A.the longterm effect of the oil spill remains to be seen B.the effect of the oil spill is quite clear and it needs no study C.the hatching of turtles is free from the effect of the oil spill D.the oil spill does lead to a higher mortality rate of the hatchings 答案:C 考查細(xì)節(jié)理解。 4.The best title for the passage should be “________”. A.The mortality rate of the hatching of turtles B.Oil spill spoils thousands of turtle eggs C.How turtles survive the oil spill D.Effect of oil spill on the environment 答案:B 考查主旨大意。 B Scientists say illegal logging is threatening one of Mexicos most famous insects. Satellite pictures show large wooded areas have been cleared from the central Mexican state of Michoacan. The forests are the winter home for millions of monarch butterflies. The butterflies go there each year to reproduce. After reproducing, the adult butterflies die,but their young return to the home of their parents each spring. The American space agency released the relevant satellite pictures last month. The images show the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. A Mexican law protects trees growing in the area. The images show that about four hundred and fortyfive hectares have been cleared since xx. Scientists say that, if the clearing continues, monarch butterflies are unlikely to continue using the Reserve as their winter home. For thousands of years, the butterflies have been flying to the same forests. Their trip begins along the border of Canada and the northeastern United States. The insects fly about eighty kilometers a day. They reach central Mexico after about sixty days. No one is sure why the brightly coloured orange and black butterflies chose these forests. However, scientists believe the area might offer the right mix of wetness and cool weather to keep the insects alive through the winter. Lincoln Brower is a professor of biology at Sweet Briar College in Virginia. He has been studying monarch butterflies for fiftytwo years. He says they have been migrating along the same path for about ten thousand years. People in Mexico have pared the arrival of the butterflies to dark cloudlike formations (陣式) filling the air. The monarchs arrive in such large numbers that they sometimes cover whole trees. Mexicos President ordered special protection for the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve eight years ago. The Mexican government has struggled to enforce (強(qiáng)制) the order. Although illegal logging has bee one way for poor people to earn money, other Mexicans are fighting to protect the butterflies home. 5.What would be the best title for the text? A.a(chǎn)void cold B.look for food C.sleep D.produce young 答案:D 根據(jù)第一段第四句“The butterflies go there each year to reproduce.” 7.Why did monarch butterflies choose the forest as their winter home? D.It is warm. 答案:B 根據(jù)第三段最后一句“However, scientists believe the area might offer the right mix of wetness and cool weather to keep the insects alive through the winter.” 8.The underlined word “migrating” in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to “________”. A.going to live in another area or country, especially in order to find food B.travelling regularly from one part of the world to another C.changing from one place or position to another D.starting using an area again as a place to live 答案:B 根據(jù)文章內(nèi)容以及后面句子“along the same path for about ten thousand years”中的關(guān)鍵詞the same path可以推知答案。 9.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
