Key Points: To be able to fully understand the passage. Difficult Points: To be able to use the reading skills efficiently. To be able to write a position about a person who you admire. Teaching methods: Task-based teaching and learning. Summarizing and practicing. Teaching Procedures: Step1. Lead in Last period, we have learned about a great woman called Jane, who is British. And today, we are going to learn another great woman, who es from China. First, let’s enjoy some pictures of her. Now, you must be wondering why she is great. Well, we will learn more in the passage. We mainly have 2 tasks today. First, we will finish the reading part in the using language. Then, we will talk about some similar great women like her and write a position to show us your result. Step 2. Reading 1. Fast reading Ask the students to read the passage quirkily and find out the answers to the following questions: (1) Who is the main character and what was her job? (1’) (2) Who was her small book intended for? (1’) (3) What did the writer decide to study at university? (1’) Suggested answers: (1) Lin Qiaozhi, a specialist in women’s disease. (2) Women in the countryside. (3) Medicine. 2. Careful reading Ask the students to read the passage carefully and then answer the following questions: (1) Write down three of Lin Qiaozhi’s achievements. (3’) (2) Find out the six words in the text used to describe Lin Qiaozhi?(6’) Suggested answers: (1) She got a medical training for her career; She became a specialist in women’s diseases. She had made sure that about 50,000 babies were safely delivered. (2) busy, hard work, determinate, gentle, kind, considerate. 3. Summary Fill in the blanks with proper words. Discussion Lin Qiaozhi was a special woman who made a successful career. Do you know any women like her? Now, discuss it with your partner and you can use the following words and sentences. Words: hard-working, energetic, active, considerate, determined, intelligent, generous, kind, helpful, modest, confident, honest, devoted, warm-hearted. Sentences: What does she look like? What is she like? Why do you admire her? How would you describe her? Why did she choose to…? What are her strengths? Can you give an example? 2. Writing Everyone should write a description of the woman you have talked about. In para.1, you should introduce the woman, for example, what she looks like and what she often does. In para.2, you should describe her characters and explain what she did to help people. You can write more paragraphs if it is necessary. And in the last paragraph, you should explain how other people view her. 3. Correction and evaluation After you have finished your position, exchange your position with you partner and correct it.
