We know that the earth has become warmer over the last century. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a group established by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Program, reports that the average surface temperature of the earth has increased during the twentieth century by 0.6°+ 0.2°C.(The + 0.2°C means that the increase might be as small as 0.4°C or as great as 0.8°C). This may seem like a small shift, but although regional and short—term temperatures do fluctuate(變動) over a wide range, global temperatures are generally quite stable. In fact, the difference between today’s average global temperature and the average global temperature during the last Ice Age is only about 5 degrees C. Indeed, it’s warmer today around the world than at any time during the past 1,000years, and the warmest years of the previous century have occurred within the past decade.
We also know that human activities—primarily the burning of fossil fuels—have increased the greenhouse gas content of the earth’s atmosphere significantly over the same period. Carbon dioxide is one of the most important greenhouse gases, which trap heat near the planet’s surface.
The vast majority of climate researchers agree with these overall findings. The scientific disagreements that do still exist primarily concern detailed aspects of the processes that make up these largely accepted general themes.
You can think of this website as a window into the world of scientific research. In this primer, you’ll find a general discussion of the physical processes underlying the earth’s climate, an outline of the kinds of data that may shed light on how the climate is changing—and the role of human activity in these changes—and a description a some of the questions and uncertainties that researchers continue to explore. This primer is organized into four interconnected sections: the Atmosphere; the Hydrosphere(水圈); the Cryosphere(低溫層); and the Biosphere(生物層).

A. engages in the climate and changes about the earth.

2. We know from the text that carbon dioxide ___.
E. is one of the most important greenhouse gases
F. has fossil fuels
G. traps cold near the planet’s surface
H. exist in human activities
3. From the text, we know when we say the temperature of something has increased by about 0.7+ 0.2°C, the + 0.2°C means___.
I. the increase might by as small as 0.3°C or as great as 0.7°C
J. the increase might by as small as 0.5°C or as great as 0.8°C
K. the increase might by as small as 0.5°C or as great as 0.9°C

Sydney J. Harris accompanied his friend George to his favorite newsstand. George greeted the man selling the newspapers politely, but in return he received rude service. He just acknowledged his customer and never even looked up at him when he requested the late night edition. Accepting the newspaper, George politely smiled and wished the newsman a pleasant weekend. The owner made an indiscernible(難識別的) sound and seemed relieved that the two men had completed their dealing.
As the two friends walked down the street, Sydney J. Harris asked, “Does he always treat you so rudely?” “Yes, unfortunately, he does,” George responded. “And are you always so kind and friendly to him?” “Yes, I am!” George continued as they turned a corner. “Why are you so nice when he’s so unfriendly to you?” With a look of deep thought, George explained, “Because I don’t want him to decide how I’m going to act.”
Who decides how you’re going to act? Is it your circumstances(環(huán)境) or the difficult people in your life that determine your responses? When we allow our conflicts to control us, we behave as though getting rid of our predicaments (處境) is our only choice. Therefore, it doesn’t really matter how we treat one another. For example, we say, “This person is causing trouble right now so I don’t care about exercising patience, self-control, and loving kindness. Instead, I want to let them know how angry I’m because of their actions.”
We forget our acts will eventually die down. But the way we handle conflicts will influence our lives for a long time. Will you only respond to the momentary crisis(瞬間危機(jī)) or will you be more concerned about the lasting value of what kind of person you are becoming?
68.What surprised Sydney J. Harris most?
A.George greeted rude people politely.
B.The newspaper-seller was too rude.
C.George greeted others politely.
D.George bought papers in the wrong place.
69.The man selling newspapers was rude because .
A.it was late into the night B.George was rude to him
C.Harris didn’t buy papers D.it was his own behavior
70.According to George, who decided how he was going to act?
A.The circumstances. B.The conflicts.
C.The difficult people. D.George himself.
71.According to the last paragraph, when we deal with conflicts, we should .
A.try to win the conflicts B.immediately stop the conflicts
C.consider the long-term benefits D.let others know our anger

Researchers in over 80 nations are taking part in a project to conduct a decade-long census(統(tǒng)計) of sea life. Scientists presented some of their findings at a recent conference as the project neared its completion.
In deep icy waters under Antarctica, scientists found bulbous tunicates, an underground animal, and many newly-discovered creatures believed to be related to starfish (海星) and other marine(海洋的)creatures.
Elsewhere in the world’s oceans, they have recently discovered many kinds of underwater life forms new to science. It is all part of a research effort called the Census of Marine Life.
“There are about 2,000 scientists worldwide involved, ” said Bob Gagosian, President/ CEO of the Consortium for Ocean Leadership. Gagosian helps manage the project. “Everywhere they’ve gone they’ve found new things, ” he says. “The ocean basically is unexplored from the point of view of marine living things.”
Researchers have placed small markers on hundreds of fish and marine animals to track by satellite their migration(遷移)routes and to discover places where sea life gathers.
According to Ron O’Dor, a senior scientist with the Census of Marine Life, knowledge of life on the ocean floor is especially limited. “90% of all the information we have is from the top hundred meters of the ocean,” O’Dor states.
And he says the sea floor is, on average, at a depth of 4, 000 meters. And so, as some machines dive far below what people have previously seen, scientists are discovering new species of plants, animals and living things.
Since the census project began, more than 5,300 new marine animals have been found. Ocean researchers say they hope to catalogue 230,000 species during the census —which some say is only a small part of all the creatures living in the sea.
72.Why do the researchers place small markers on many marine creatures?
A.To catch them. B.To research them.
C.To kill them. D.To protect them.
73.From what Ron O’Dor says, we can conclude that .
A.human beings only know a little about marine life
B.the oceans don’t need to be further explored
C.he considers exploring the ocean a dangerous thing
D.the marine creatures mainly live on the top of the ocean
74.What can we learn from the passage?
A.About 2,000 scientists from America are involved in the project.
B.The census of sea life will last for ten years.
C.230,000 new marine animals have been found.
D.The sea floor is at a depth of 400 meters.
75.Why does the author write the passage?
A.To tell the news that new marine creatures are being discovered
B.To encourage people to find new marine creatures
C.To prove the importance of marine creatures
D.To introduce the newly-discovered creatures.
