US researchers have found traces of an ancient lake on Mars recently, increasing hopes of discovering evidence that billions of years ago the Red planet hosted life.
The lake, which dates back some 3.4 billion years, appears to have covered as much as 80 square miles and was up to 1,500 feet deep, said the team from the University of Colorado.
“This is the first clear evidence of shorelines on the surface of Mars,”said Boulder' s research associate,Gaetano Di Achille,in a study published in the latest edition of Geophysical Rese arch Letters.
“The identification of the shorelines and accompanying geological evidence allows us to calculate the size and volume of the lake, which appears to have formed about 3.4 billion years ago.”
Analysis of the images has shown the water carved out the canyon(溪谷)in which it was found, which then opened out into a valley depositing(使淤積)sediment(沉積)which formed a delta(三角洲).
“Finding shorelines is a great discovery to us,”said assistant professor Brian Hynek, adding it showed the lake existed at a time when Mars was thought to have been cold and dry.
Scientists believe the oldest surfaces on Mars formed during the wet and warm era known as the Noachan epoch, about 4.1 billion to 3.7 billion years ago.
The newly discovered lake is believed to date from the Hesperian era and postdates the end of the warm and wet period on Mars by 300 million years, according to the study.
Scientists believe deltas next to the lake may well hold secrets about past life on Mars as such places on Earth have become the natural deposits of organic carbon and other markers of life.
1. The size of the lake found on Mars is________.
A.80 square miles B.1,500 square miles
C.3.4 billion square miles D.300 million square miles
答案:A 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第二段中“The lake, which dates back some 3.4 billion years, appears to have covered as much as 80 square miles”一句,可推知答案。
2. When the lake existed, the weather on Mars was ________.

C.cold and dry D.cold and wet
答案:C 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。根據(jù)第六段中…it showed the lake existed at a time when Mars was thought to have been cold and dry知,答案為C。
3. Why do scientists think deltas near the lake may hold secrets about past life on Mars?
A. Because similar places on Earth have become natural deposits of markers of life.
B.Because someone has put secrets about past life on Mars there.
C.Because past life has been found in other deltas on Mars.
D.Because some people are said to have already seen life marks there.
答案:A 細(xì)節(jié)理解題。由原文最后一句可直接找到答案。

D.The lake traces prove that there exists life on Mars now.

A new study suggests a natural method to improve the mental and physical health of young adults. Researchers say the answer is a diet of more fruit and vegetables, which may make young people calmer, happier and more energetic in their daily life.
Psychology researchers from New Zealand`s University of Otago studied the relationship between day-to-day emotions and food consumption(消費(fèi)). The study by Drs. Conner and her team , is published in the British Journal of Health Psychology.
For the research, a total of 281 young adults completed all Internet-based daily food diary for 21 days. These participants completed a survey giving details of their age, gender, weight and height. Those with a history of an eating disorder were not included. On each of the 21 days, participants logged into their diary each evening and wrote how they felt using nine positive and nine negative adjectives. They were also asked five questions about what they had eaten that day. Specifically, participants were asked to report the number of servings eaten of fruit ,vegetables and several categories of unhealthy foods like biscuits/cookies, potato crisps, and cakes/muffins.
The results showed a strong day-to-day relationship between more positive mood and higher fruit and vegetable consumption, but not other foods.
To understand which comes first-feeling positive or eating healthier foods-Conner and her team ran other analyses and found that eating fruits and vegetables helped improvements in positive mood the next day, suggesting that healthy foods may improve mood.
“After further analysis we thought that young people would need to consume about seven to eight total serving of fruits and vegetables perday to notice a meaningful positive change. One serving of fruit or vegetable is about the size that could fit in your palm, or half a cup,” Conner said.

When I was a child, I often dreamed of the time when I could leave home and escape to the city. We live on a farmland, in the winter especially, we were quite cut off from the outside world. As soon as I left school, I packed my bags and moved to the capital. However, I soon discovered that my life has its problems too.
One big disadvantage is money. It costs so much to go out, not to mention basics like food and housing. Another disadvantage is pollution. I suffer from asthma(哮喘), and at times the air is so bad that I am afraid to go outside. Then there is the problem of traveling round. Although I have a car, I seldom use it because of the traffic jams. One choice is to go by bicycle, but that can be quite dangerous.
Of course there are advantages. First, there is so much to do in the city, whatever your tastes in culture or entertainment(娛樂(lè)). Besides, there are wonderful jobs and greater chances of moving to a more important job or position. Finally, if you like shopping, the variety of goods is very surprising—and, what is more, shops are often only a short walk away.
Is life better then, in the city? Perhaps it is, when you are in your teens or twenties. However, as you get older, and especially if you have small children, the peace of the countryside may seem preferable. I certainly hope to move back there soon.

On the outside was a dark-skinned young man in his early twenties. His expressive brown eyes met and held mine, and in the next instant a beautiful, bright smile covered his face.I gave in immediately. The power of that broad smile dissolved all bitterness within me, and I felt the muscles in my own face happily responding.
"Beautiful day, isn't it?" I remarked, in passing. Then I turned back."I really owe you a debt of thanks," I said softly.

"Yes," my reply was enthusiastic and sincere, "tell him I said, 'Thank you!'"
"Thank you?" The woman seemed slightly puzzled.
I gave her arm a friendly pat as I turned to leave."Just tell him that," I insisted."He'll understand.I am sure !"
