A study has showed that the brain makes decisions about 10 seconds before a person realizes it.
Experts involved in the study said that looking at brain activity while making a decision, they could predict the choices the subjects would make, before they realized that they had made a decision. Lead researcher John-Dylan Haynes, a neuroscientist (神經(jīng)學(xué)家)at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig, said that the new findings called into questions for “consciousness”of decisions that people make, and might even challenge ideas as to how“free”people are to make a decision at a particular moment.
“We think our decisions are conscious, but these data show that consciousness is just the tip of the iceberg,”Nature magazine quoted (引用) him as saying. Thinking the results“quite dramatic”, Frank Tong of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, said that 10 seconds is“a lifetime”in terms of brain activity.
During the study, the brains of 14 volunteers were imaged as they performed a decision-making task. The subjects had two buttons before them, each to be operated by a different hand, which they could press when they felt the urge to. They were simultaneously (同時地)shown a stream of letters, which appeared on a screen at half-second intervals (間隔). The volunteers had to remember which letter was showing when they decided to press their button.
Upon analysis of the data, the researchers realized that the earliest signal they could catch started seven seconds before the volunteers reported having made their decision. Given the delay of a few seconds in the imaging, they reckoned (估計) that the brain activity could have begun about ten seconds before the conscious decision. The researchers showed that the signals were picked up from a region (區(qū)域)called the frontopolar cortex (腦額極皮層), which is located at the front of the brain, immediately behind the forehead.
While writing about the observations made during the research in his study report, Haynes said that the frontopolar cortex might be the brain region where decisions are started. He also showed that the next step in the research would be to speed up the data analysis so as to enable his team to predict people’s choices as their brains would make them.

4. The final purpose of the research ______.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A,B,C和D)中,選出最佳選項。
Prejudice is a preconceived opinion that is not based on fact or reason. Examples of prejudice in schools include believing that some students are particular type of people simply because of the way they dress or act, or believing that a certain group is good at sports simply because many peop1e in that group are goad at sports. Another example is believing that a boy is good at science because many boys are good at science.
I would like to cite more examples from the English literature. The best example of “prejudice” can be found in Jane Austen’s novels. Her novels in the history of English literature are popularly known as "novels of manners".Thus you can clearly understand that where manners and social behavior are concerned,"prejudice" is inevitable ! Austen' s famous novel Pride and Prejudice is the best example in this respect. When you read the novel, the very first line that would strike you is “it is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.”It is an example of 18th century English middle class prejudice that eventually looked upon women just as an object that would serve as the basic sign for a man to establish his manliness and his superior and well acquired financial status. This novel is chiefly about class division, social norms and the consequent human behavior. The characters Elizabeth and Darcy,in their journey of 1ife through the course of the novel, highlight their personal prejudices towards one another that arise from their different social strata(階層).Darcy,a rich man , at first ,
fails to admire the beauty and intelligence of Elizabeth because of her low social status:"she is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me;”and Elizabeth, proud of her "first impressions",failed to understand the well natured man under the proud and unfriendly Darcy.
1. What is "prejudice" defined in this passage?
A. Prejudice is a reasonable idea that is based on one’s own experience.
B. Prejudice is a preference for one group of people or things over another.
C. Prejudice is a preconceived opinion before becoming aware of fact or reason.
D. Prejudice is an unreasonable dislike of a particular group of people or things.
2. The underlined word "inevitable" in the second paragraph probably_means_ .
A. unavoidable B. reasonable C. unbelievable D. valuable
3.From the novel Pride and Prejudice,we can’t learn that .
A. where manners and social behavior are concerned "prejudice" is inevitable
B. "prejudice" was defined and compared with“pride” in 18th century
C. it's about class division, social norms and the consequent human behavior
D. personal prejudices towards one another arise from different social strata
