With an eye for style and a heart for the environment, 18-year-old Alexis Giger launched a do-it-yourself blog aimed at “reducing your environmental impact fashionably”.
The idea was sparked (激發(fā)) by the ecology unit in her biology class at Charlotte Latin School last year, she said, which taught her about issues like deforestation and habitat destruction.“I started thinking about what I could do to stop the wastefulness in my immediate community,” the fashion lover said.
“The blog, ecouturieracg.wordpress.com, aims to make reusing thrift store (舊貨店) finds or last season's pieces easy and fashionable while cutting down on the resources consumed by garment production,” Alexis said.Through online research, she discovered that a simple cotton
T-shirt takes more than 700 gallons of water to make.
“It made me realize that the fashion industry consumes huge amounts of natural resources as it relies on producing garments quickly and in large supply—many of the garments are only intended to be worn three or four times,” she said.
Alexis had a number of tools to help her get started. Her mom, Kimberly, taught her to sew when she was 5.Her grandmother taught her to crochet (鉤邊) around the same time.Alexis said she also gained technical knowledge and inspiration from her part-time job at a clothing company that creates theater wardrobes for schools and drama productions.
Prior to the blog launch, she spent several months illustrating “recycling” projects by creating photo tutorials.Though Ecouturier hasn't been online long, she's been getting positive feedback.“I've had people come up to me in the hall and say,‘Hey, I saw your blog.I'm working on one of the projects right now, ’” Alexis said.
She said she hasn't bought a brand-new piece of clothing since last July, and her thrift store shopping has paid off with finds such as a $5 (31 yuan) dress she wore to homecoming.
“Taking an hour from Saturday afternoon to make something for yourself can really have an impact on the environment.A little change every day can really add up,” Alexis said.

It’s no secret that many children would be healthier and happier with adoptive parents than with the parents that nature dealt them. That’s especially true of children of children who remain in abusive homes because the law blindly favors biological parents. It’s also true of children who suffer for years in foster homes because of parents who can’t or won’t care for them but refuse to give up custody (監(jiān)護(hù)) rights.
Fourteen-year-old Kimberly Mays fits neither description, but her recent court victoty could eventually help children who do. Kimberly has been the object of an angry custody battle between the man who raised her and her biological parents, with whom she has never lived. A Florida judge ruled that the teenager can remain with the only father she’s ever known and that her biological parents have “no legal right” on her.
The ruling, though it may yet be reversed, sets aside the principle that biology is the primary determinant of parentage. That’s an important development, though not so much in time.
Shorly after birth in December 1978, Kimberly Mays and another baby were mistakenly switched and sent home with the wrong parents. Kimberly’s biological parents, Ernest and Regina Twigg, received a child who died of a heart disease in 1988. Medical tests showed that the child wasn’t the Twiggs’ own daughter, but Kim only was, thus causing a custody battle with Robert Mays. In 1989, the two families agreed that Mr. Mays would continue to have custody with the Twiggs getting visiting rights. Those rights were ended when Mr. Mays decided that Kimberly was being harmed.
The decision to leave Kimberly with Mr. Mays caused people to debate her suit. But the judge made clear that Kimberly did have rights to make a decision on her own behalf. Thus he made clear that she was more than just possession to be handled as adults saw it.
Certainly, the biological link between parent and child is important. But biological parents aren’t alway preferable to adoptive ones, and biological parentage does not have an complete ownership that cancels all the rights of children.
1. What was first of all considered in the Florida judge’s ruling?
A. The biological link B. The child’s benefits
C. The true practice D. The parents’s feelings.
由第二段 “A Florida judge ruled that the teenager can remain with the only father she’s ever known and that her biological parents have ‘no legal right’ on her.” 由第三段對(duì)判決的評(píng)論 “The ruling, though it may yet be reversed, sets aside the principle that biology is the primary determinant of parentage. That’s an important development, though not so much in time.”
2. We can learn from the Kimberly’s case that .
A. children are more than just personal possessions of their parents
B. the biological link between parent and child should be paid more attention to
C. foster homes bring children more pain and suffering than care
D. biological parents shouldn’t demand custody rights after their child is adopted
由倒數(shù)第二段最后一句話 “Thus he made clear that she was more than just possession to be handled as adults saw it.”
3. The Twiggs demanded custody rights to Kimberly because they .
A. found her unhappy in Mr.May’s custody
B. thought they could treat her nicer
C. were her biological parents
D. felt very sorry about their past mistake
由第四段 “Medical tests showed that the child wasn’t the Twiggs’ own daughter, but Kim only was, thus causing a custody battle with Robert Mays.”
4. Kimberly had been given to Mr.Mays .
A. by complete accident B. at his request
C. out of her parents’s mistakes D. for better care
本題為細(xì)節(jié)題,由第四段 “Shorly after birth in December 1978, Kimberly Mays and another baby were mistakenly switched and sent home with the wrong parents.”
The discovery of an ancient giant panda skull has confirmed its bamboo diet dates back more than 2 million years and may have played a key part in its survival.
A Chinese-US research team reports its results today following studies on a fossil skull found in south China’s Cuangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in 2001.
The six fossils unearthed in Jinyin Cave are dated between 2.4 and 2 million years ago, according to the report in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, an influential US journal.
Jin Changzhu, of the chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and lead author of the paper, said the smaller fossil skull indicates the giant pandas were about a third smaller than today’s pandas.
Researchers knew the panda reached its maximum size about 500,000 years ago, when it peaked ,and then gradually became smaller.
Jin, a paleontologist (古生物學(xué)者) at the Institute of Vertebrate paleontology and Paleoanthropology (古人類(lèi)學(xué)) attached to the CAS, said the size variation was a basic rule of evolution.
“A species tends to grow bigger when it reaches the peak of its population , but becomes smaller when numbers decline,” he said.
The dental remains of the skull, which is the oldest giant panda skull ever found, are similar to today’s pandas, indicating the type of teeth that could munch (津津有味地嚼)mountains of bamboo. A panda can eat up to 40kg of bamboo per day.
Paleoanthropologist Russell Ciochon, the US co-author at the University of lowa, said the panda’s focus on bamboo could have helped it survive all these years.
“Once an animal begins to rely on a common and stable food source, such as bamboo, it tends to evolve a larger body size,” he said. “As individuals of the evolving species grow bigger, they have a better chance not to be eaten by predators (肉食動(dòng)物) due to their larger body size.”
1. According to the research of the CAS , there were most pandas in the world .
A. 2 million years ago B. between 2.4 and 2 million years ago
C. 500,000 years ago D. Nowadays
第四段提到了CAS,接下來(lái)一段提到 “Researchers knew the panda reached its maximum size about 500,000 years ago, when it peaked ...”
2. The underlined word “variation” in para 6 means .
A. fall B. change C. increase D. decrease
3. From the passage, we can learn .
A. pandas began to eat bamboo 2 million years ago
B. a species tends to grow smaller when numbers decline
C. the giant pandas were about a third the size of today’s pandas
D. pandas’ bamboo has played an important role in its development
由第七段 ““A species tends to grow bigger when it reaches the peak of its population , but becomes smaller when numbers decline,” 可知,B選項(xiàng)正確。
由第一段 “...its bamboo diet dates back more than 2 million years ...” 可知,A選項(xiàng)與文章細(xì)節(jié)不符;由第四段 “...the giant pandas were about a third smaller than today’s pandas.”可知,當(dāng)時(shí)的大熊貓比現(xiàn)在的小三分之一,言外之意就是當(dāng)時(shí)的大熊貓的體型是今天大熊貓的體型的三分之二,正確表達(dá)應(yīng)該是“the giant pandas were about two thirds the size of today’s pandas”,故C選項(xiàng)錯(cuò)誤。結(jié)合第一段 “...its bamboo diet dates back more than 2 million years and may have played a key part in its survival.” 和倒數(shù)第二段 “... the panda’s focus on bamboo could have helped it survive all these years.”
4.The passage mainly tells us that .
A. pandas are endangered
B. pandas had a long history
C. pandas had bamboo to beat predators
D. today’s Pandas are similar to the oldest ones
由文章最后一段的總結(jié) “Once an animal begins to rely on a common and stable food source, such as bamboo, it tends to evolve a larger body size,” he said. “As individuals of the evolving species grow bigger, they have a better chance not to be eaten by predators (肉食動(dòng)物) due to their larger body size.”
Seen from space the earth is covered with a blue mantle. It is a planet on which the continents(洲,大陸) are dwarfed (相形見(jiàn)絀) by the ocean surrounding them and the vastness of the marine (海洋的) area.
An astonishing 80 percent of all life on earth is to be found hidden beneath the waves and this vast global ocean drives the natural forces which keep life on our planet. The ocean provides necessary sources of protein, energy, minerals and other products and the rolling of the sea across the planet creates over half our oxygen, drives weather systems and natural flows of energy and nutrients around the world, transports water masses many times greater than all the rivers on land combined and keeps the earth suitable for living things to survive. Without the global ocean there would be no life on earth.
It is seriously worrying, then, that we are damaging the ocean on a level that is unimaginable to most people.
We now know that human activity can have a serious influence on the vital forces of our planet. We have fundamentally changed our global climate and are just beginning to understand the consequences of that.
As yet largely unseen, but just as serious, are the influences we are having on the ocean. A healthy ocean has diverse ecosystems and strong and healthy habitats. The actual state of our ocean is a far cry from this natural state.
A lot of pressure is being put directly and indirectly on ocean ecosystems by human activities.?Consequently ecosystems are breaking down as marine species are in danger of dying out and ocean habitats are being destroyed. With the decrease in their diversity, ocean ecosystems are losing their natural way of recovery.?
We need to defend the ocean now more than ever, because climate change is having a potentially disastrous impact on the marine world.
1、. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
? A. What the ocean looks like.? B. What the ocean is made up of.
? C. What live in the ocean.?? D. What functions the ocean has.
2、. According to the text, the ocean directly provides people with ____.
? A. water forming rivers B. comfortable habitats
C. all the natural forces they need D. driving forces for energy and nutrients
3、. It is not realized by many people that we have ____.
? A. done great harm to the ocean???? B. benefited greatly from the ocean
? C. fundamentally changed our global climate
D. begun to suffer the consequences of pollution??
4、. The best title for this text would be ____.
? A. Protecting Our Planet????? B. Defending Our Ocean
? C. Getting to Know Our Planet?? D. Make Good Use of Our Ocean
