Education in the United States is compulsory for children up to about the age of sixteen. Most young people stay in school longer than that. Most graduate from high school at the age of 17 or 18.
Almost half of these high school graduates continue their education at a college or university. Education for most young people in this country is free up to the time they graduate from high school. There are private schools, but most parents send their children to public schools, where students do not pay tuition. When young people go to college, however, they must pay tuition at a public university or a private university. University costs are going up a lot:private universities have become very expensive because the government does not help them.
Who pays? The parents of children in college may have to pay more, or often students may have to find jobs. These students have to worry about assignments and grades and also about their jobs. If they work too much at their jobs they may be absent from class or miss assignments or make too many errors on tests. They may even fail their courses and have to leave the university.
For many students, the problem of getting an education is not just a problem of homework and exams. They also have to make money to pay for tuition. And professors don't teach them how to do that!
1.In the United States, almost half of the high school graduates________.
A.go to colleges and universities
B.need not pay any tuition
C.have to enter open universities
D.work hard to avoid errors on tests
由文章第二段第一句“Almost half of these high school graduates continue their education at a college or university”可知,幾乎有一半的中學(xué)生畢業(yè)都在大學(xué)或?qū)W院里繼續(xù)深造。
2.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Most parents prefer to send their children to public schools rather than to private schools due to tuition.
B.Education is not free until the students graduate from high school.
C.University costs are on the increase.
D.The students may be absent from class if they work overtime.
由文章第二段第二句“Education for most young people in this country is free up to the time they graduate from high school.”
3.The private university students have to pay more money for tuition because________.
A.the government does not finance the private universities
B.none of companies support the private universities
C.the teaching quality of the private universities are superior to public ones
D.they have some trouble in passing the exams
由文章第二段第五句“University costs are going up a lot; private universities have become very expensive because the government does not help them.”
4.The main idea of the passage might be________.
A.selecting a good university costs in the United States
B.the increase on university costs in the United States
C.the argument about education in the United States
D.the problem of getting an education in the United States

Men are spending more and more time in the kitchen encouraged by celebrity (名人) chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jamie Oliver, according to a report from Oxford University.
The effect of the celebrity role models, who have given cooking a more manly picture, has combined with a more general drive towards sexual equality and men now spend more than twice the amount of time preparing meals than they did in 1961.
According to the research by Prof. Jonatahn Gershuny, who runs the Centre for Time Research at Oxford, men now spend more than half an hour a day cooking, up from just 12 minutes a day in 1961.
Prof. Gershuny said, “The man in the kitchen is part of a much wider social trend. There has been 40 years of sexual equality, but there is another 40 years probably to come.”
Women, who a generation ago spent nearly two hours a day cooking, now spend just one hour and seven minutes—a great fall, but they still spend far more time in the kitchen than men.
Some experts have named these men in aprons as “Gastrosexuals (men using cooking skills to impress friends)”, who have been inspired to pick up a kitchen knife by the success of Ramsay, Oliver as well as other male celebrity chefs such as Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Marco Pierre White and Keith Floyd.
“I was married in 1974. When my father came to visit me a few weeks later, I was wearing an apron when I opened the door. He laughed,” said Prof. Gershuny. “That would never happen now.”
Two-thirds of adults say that they come together to share at least three times a week, even if it is not necessarily around a kitchen or dining room table. Prof. Gershuny pointed out that the family meal was now rarely eaten by all of its members around a table—with many “family meals” in fact taken on the sofa in the sitting room, and shared by family members. “The family meal has changed a lot, and few of us eat—as I did when I was a child—at least two meals a day together as a family. But it has survived in a different format.”
12. What is one reason behind the trend that men spend more time cooking than before?
A. The improvement of cooks’ status.
B. The influence of popular female chefs.
C. The change of female’s view on cooking.
D. The development of sexual equality campaign.
13. What does the author think about the time men and women spend on cooking?
A. Men spend more time cooking than women nowadays.
B. Women spend much less time on cooking than before.
C. It will take 40 years before men spend more time at the stove than women.
D. There is a sharp decline in the time men spend on cooking compared with 1961.
14. How did Prof. Gershuny see the family meal according to the passage?
A. It has become a thing of the past.
B. It is very different from what it used to be.
C. It shouldn’t be advocated in modern times.
D. It is beneficial to the stability of the family.
15. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. The Changes of Family Meals
B. Equality between Men and Women
C. Cooking into a New Trend for Men
D. Cooking—a Thing of the Past for Women

Everybody is happy as his pay rises. Yet pleasure at your own can disappear if you learn that a fellow worker has been given a bigger one. Indeed, if he is known as being lazy, you might even be quite cross. Such behavior is regarded as “all too human”, with the underlying belief that other animals would not be able to have this finely developed sense of sadness. But a study by Sarah Brosnan of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, which has just been published in Nature, suggests that it is all too monkey, as well.
??? The researchers studied the behaviors of some kind of female brown monkeys. They look smart. They are good-natured, co-operative creatures, and they share their food happily. Above all, like female human beings, they tend to pay much closer attention to the value of “goods and services” than males.
??? Such characteristics make them perfect subjects for Doctor Brosnan’s study. The researchers spent two years teaching their monkeys to exchange tokens (獎(jiǎng)券) for food. Normally, the monkeys were happy enough to exchange pieces of rock for pieces of cucumber. However, when two monkeys were placed in separate and connected rooms, so that each other could observe what the other is getting in return for its rock, they became quite different.
In the world of monkeys, grapes are excellent goods (and much preferable to cucumbers). So when one monkey was handed a grape in exchange for her token, the second was not willing to hand hers over for a mere piece of cucumber. And if one received a grape without having to provide her token in exchange at all, the other either shook her own token at the researcher, or refused to accept the cucumber. Indeed, the mere presence of a grape in the other room (without an actual monkey to eat it) was enough to bring about dissatisfaction in a female monkey.
The researches suggest that these monkeys, like humans, are guided by social senses. In the wild, they are co-operative and group-living. Such co-operation is likely to be firm only when each animal feels it is not being cheated. Feelings of anger when unfairly treated, it seems, are not the nature of human beings alone. Refusing a smaller reward completely makes these feelings clear to other animals of the group. However, whether such a sense of fairness developed independently in monkeys and humans, or whether it comes from the common roots that they had 35 million years ago, is, as yet, an unanswered question.
1. According to the passage, which of the following statements is true?
? A. Only monkeys and humans can have the sense of fairness in the world.
? B. Women will show more dissatisfaction than men when unfairly treated.
???C. In the wild, monkeys are never unhappy to share their food with each other.
???D. Monkeys can exchange cucumbers for grapes, for grapes are more attractive.
文章中第二段 “Above all, like female human beings, they tend to pay much closer attention to the value of “goods and services” than males.” 與第三段 “Such characteristics make them perfect subjects for Doctor Brosnan’s study.”
從最后一段 “Refusing a smaller reward completely makes these feelings clear to other animals of the group. However, whether such a sense of fairness developed independently in monkeys and humans, or whether it comes from the common roots that they had 35 million years ago, is, as yet, an unanswered question.”中可知,independently (獨(dú)立)對(duì)應(yīng)A選項(xiàng)中的only, whether…or…an unanswered question(是否…
從第三段 “Normally, the monkeys were happy enough to exchange pieces of rock for pieces of cucumber. However, when two monkeys were placed in separate and connected rooms, so that each other could observe what the other is getting in return for its rock, they became quite different.”
從第四段首句 “In the world of monkeys, grapes are excellent goods (and much preferable to cucumbers).” 中注意 “excellent (極好的)” 與 “ preferable(更好的)” 兩詞,與D選項(xiàng) “for grapes are more attractive(更具有吸引力的)” 意思不一致。
2. The underlined statement “it is all too monkey” means that ________.
??? A. monkeys are also angry with lazy fellows
??? B. feeling bitter at unfairness is also monkey’s nature
??? C. monkeys, like humans, tend to be envious of each other
??? D. no animals other than monkeys can develop such feelings
接下來(lái)提到的 “it is all too monkey” 也是表達(dá) “猴子受到不公平待遇的時(shí)候感到痛苦也是猴子的本能?!钡囊馑肌9蚀鸢笧锽。A選項(xiàng) “猴子對(duì)懶惰的同伴也會(huì)生氣”, C選項(xiàng) “猴子像人類(lèi)一樣會(huì)彼此嫉妒”, D選項(xiàng) “除了猴子沒(méi)有其他的動(dòng)物會(huì)有那種感覺(jué)” 都與文章意思不符。
3. Female monkeys of this kind are chosen for the research most probably because they are ___ .
??? A. more likely to weigh what they get
??? B. attentive to researchers’ instructions
??? C. nice in both appearance and behaviors
????D. more ready to help others than their male companions
從文章中第二段 “Above all, like female human beings, they tend to pay much closer attention to the value of “goods and services” than males.” 與第三段 “Such characteristics make them perfect subjects for Doctor Brosnan’s study.”
4. Which of the following conclusions is TRUE according to the passage?
??? A. Human beings' feelings of anger are developed from the monkeys.
??? B. In the research, male monkeys are less likely to exchange food with others.
??? C. Co-operation between monkeys stays firm before the realization of being cheated.
??? D. Only monkeys and humans have the sense of fairness which dates back to 35 million years ago.
從文章最后一段 “Such co-operation is likely to be firm only when each animal feels it is not being cheated.”
5. What can we infer about the monkeys in Sarah’s study?
? A. The monkeys can be trained to develop social senses.
? ?B. They usually show their feelings openly as humans do.
C. The monkeys may show their satisfaction with equal treatment.
?? D. Co-operation among the monkeys remains effective in the wild.
從文章最后一段 “The researches suggest that these monkeys, like humans, are guided by social senses. In the wild, they are co-operative and group-living.”
